A three month beard is a 1.5″ (4cm) long medium-sized beard. It’s impossible to say exactly what your beard will look like after 3 months though, as everyone’s beards grow at different speeds and densities.

If your goal is to grow a beard for 3 months without doing anything to it, then an unkempt 1-2 inch beard is the most likely end result.
Beards in this length region are some of the most popular around, and I’m sure you know a friend or two who regularly sport this beard size. No wonder, with good line up and trimming work, a three month beard can look absolutely amazing.
However, without any trimming, a beard of 12 weeks will most certainly make you look unkepmt, homeless-like, and if the growth is not very thick, you may even get the undesired “pube beard” effect as well.
What Should a Beard Look Like After 3 Months
The average beard growth rate is ½-inch per month, which means that an average three month beard is 1.5″ in length.
Of course, it could be less or more than that, based on your genetics, nutrition, lifestyle habits, and a bunch of other factors.
Nevertheless, 1.5″ should look like a real beard already, and if you think about it, that’s already a quarter of the way to a full yeard!
At the three month mark men that naturally grow thick beards should no longer be able to see their chin, jaw, or lower cheeks at all. Men with modestly patchy beards, may see some bald spots on the upper cheek area as these continue to fill slowly over the months.

How to Grow and Maintain a Three Month Beard
There really isn’t a rule book for this stuff. If you want to grow your beard out for three full months, then all you have to do is to lay down the razor and be patient.
The only choice you really need to make is whether you’re willing to maintain the beard along the way as it grows (by lining up the cheeks, trimming the neckline, etc) or are you just going to let it grow 100% natural.
Three months is not that long of a time to just let your beard grow naturally, but if you need to look professional or have something like a job interview coming up, then it doesn’t hurt to clean up the look a bit.
What Beard Products to Use on a 3 Month Beard
After 12 weeks of growing a beard, using beard products starts to actually make some sense.
Beard oil is by far the most useful one, as a beard this long will start to get dry easily. For a three month beard, 2-3 drops of beard oil is a good amount.

Both beard balm and beard wax would offer some nice styling help and hold for the beard, but they are not yet necessary at this point.
If your beard begins to feel brittle and dry (very common at the three month mark), then consider getting a dedicated beard wash (our review of the best washes here) and beard conditioner (our review of the best conditioners here), and please, do your facial hair a favor and don’t wash it more than 2-3 times per week.

Pros and Cons of a Three Month Beard
So what are the benefits and negatives of growing your beard out for 12 weeks?
Well, for starters it will relieve you from the agony of constantly having to shave your facial hair, and also means you don’t have to endure any in-grown beard hairs or razor bumps.
On the flip side, if you do trim and line up the beard yourself, then it will likely take just as much time to groom your beard than it would take shaving.
But what I most like about having a 3 month beard is the ability to choose what facial hair style to go for. It’s like a blank canvas to work with, as 1.5″ length of beard hairs evenly distributed on your face will allow you to try and test most of the beard styles out there.
Should you go for the classic full beard? Maybe trim down to a BeardStache? Or go ham and grow yourself a wolverine beard! It’s all up to you.

Growing a beard out for three months takes patience, but once you’re done you will have a nice medium-length beard of 1.5″ to work with and shape into any style you choose.
It will take some time and beard products to properly maintain a beard of this length, as a bare minimum you should at least own a bottle of beard oil, beard scissors, and a beard trimmer.
