Peter Dinklage plays the role of Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones.

Of course, you already knew that because Tyrion is indisputedly the best character in the whole series with one of the greatest story arches the series had to offer.

And you know what else was great? His journey from a rich reckless clean-shaven loafer into a fully bearded hero who eventually became the hand of the king (and queen).

Dinklage sported multiple beard styles as Tyrion in GoT, and as his role in the series became more important by each passing episode, his beard seemed to also grow thicker and fuller at the same time.

And if you wanted to learn everything there is to know about the beard of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), we have conventiently created you this ultimate guide to his facial hair:

There have been several different beard styles that Tyrion Lannister sported in all of the eight seasons that the Game of Thrones aired, but the one seen on him most commonly is called the classic full beard.

As the name implies, it’s a full face beard style, typically 1-2″ in length.

Some other beard styles Dinklage has had on the series include:

Like most men with dwarfism, Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) has an oblong shaped face.

It’s one of the seven main face shapes, and best known for its rectangle-like look.

Dinklage does a great job in matching his hairstyle with his beard style as long hair and full beards work tremendously well together, and his character beard is a good match for his oblong face shape.

This is of course, not surprising, as many actors do have stylists and professional barbers working with them to ensure that the beard and haircut matches with the features of the face and its shape.

Peter Dinklage No Beard vs. Beard

Like most guys, Peter Dinklage looks better with a beard. Not just better, but a straight up bad-ass.

It’s funny that he himself stated this in his Reddit Ask Me Anything thread:

“I had one hesitation, because of the fantasy genre, I told him I didn’t want a really long beard and pointy shoes, and they assured me this character and this world wasn’t that. They told me about his complexity, the fact that he wasn’t a hero or a villain, that he was a womanizer and a drinker, and they painted a flawed and beautiful portrait of him, so i signed on.”

In the last season of Game of Thrones, Tyrion was often seen with a well-groomed Ducktail beard. It looks a lot like his character full beard, but the chin is shaped into a point and the edges are more defined and angular.

Occasionally Dinklage also sported various lengths of boxed beards in GoT. The style features sharply defined beards neckline and cheekline, with an even length of ½ to 1″ thorough the beard area which come together to create a “box” around the jawline.

Here’s Peter Dinklage from that same Emmy gala, but from this angle, we can see that the beard style he sported was actually an extended goatee, with some growth extending along the jawline as well.

Sometimes Dinklage let’s his goatee loose, and this is the end result. Yes it’s a scraggly beard, but that’s not to say it would look bad!

A rare sighting: Peter Dinklage with a Van Dyke style beard which features some growth on the chin and a prominent mustache that won’t connect to it.

Since Tyrion Lannister often has a quite basic full beard style in GoT, it’s not that hard to mimic yourself.

Just let your beard grow out for two to four months until it reaches the desired length, and then do some minimal trimming (basically just even up the length and define the neck and cheek lines).

What will be the difficult part though is actually having strong enough beard growing genetics so that you can pull off the needed thickness for the entire beard area.

As you can see, Dinklage is the master of filling the beards underlip area and he also has a beard that connects really well with the mustache.
